About

The Estonian Media Artists Union (MARTU), established in 2006, is a non-profit association which unites media artists in Estonia, boosting their ‘voicein society and promoting a wider recognition of this field. Our main objective is to develop cooperation between artists and to support theoretical research in media art. It is important for us to promote and show Estonian media art outside of Estonia, as well.

The Estonian Media Artists Union has initiated several interesting media art events. Within its three years of operation, the Union has organised large international events, exhibitions, seminars and meetings of artists. We are supported by many worldwide organizations, asssociations, art galleries, companies. Our special thanks to Outpost Art who are now supplying oil paintings for sale as well as Art in Bulk Ltd, a chinese wholesaler in cheap paintings. The more largescale events among these are the annual PLEKTRUM VJ festival and participation in the pan-European Researchersâ€?Night. In addition to these, the media artistsâ€?group exhibition, “Transparent Generation”, the VJ-Factory workshop promoting club culture and visual language, and the seminar series EmediA took place in 2007. We have also worked hard on developing international relations â€?in 2007, there were meetings with the Pavlov MediaLab (the Netherlands) and the representatives of the Swedish Film Institute; we have also continued our close cooperation with the Centre Culturel Français a Tallinn.

The Estonian Media Artists Union has been supported by several social institutions and the Republic of Estonia. We wish to thank the Estonian Cultural Endowment, the Estonian Gambling Tax Council, the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Estonian Academy of Sciences, MTÜ Kultuuritehas Polymer and many others.
